  • Characteristics of ASLV

The ASLV was an early effort by ISRO to overcome the challenges associated with launching payloads into space, particularly focusing on increasing the payload capacity beyond what the earlier Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) could achieve. It was a four-stage launch vehicle, incorporating both solid and liquid propulsion technologies, reflecting ISRO’s evolving engineering and technological capabilities.

The full form of ASLV in Hindi is ऑगमेंटेड सैटेलाइट लॉन्च व्हीकल (ASLV), which translates to “उन्नत उपग्रह प्रक्षेपण यान”.

A – उन्नत (Augmented)
S – उपग्रह (Satellite)
L – प्रक्षेपण (Launch)
V – यान (Vehicle)

Key Features and Milestones of ASLV:

  1. Four-Stage Vehicle: The ASLV’s design included four stages; the first and third stages used solid propellant, while the second and fourth stages utilized liquid propellant. This combination was intended to optimize performance and payload capacity.
  2. Increased Payload Capacity: Compared to its predecessor, the SLV, ASLV was designed to carry heavier payloads. It aimed to place satellites weighing up to 150 kg into low Earth orbit, a significant step up from the capabilities of the SLV.
  3. Technological Advancements: The development of the ASLV allowed ISRO to gain valuable experience in handling complex launch vehicle technologies, including stage separation mechanisms and the integration of liquid propulsion stages.
  4. Missions: Despite initial setbacks, the ASLV program achieved success with the launch of satellites such as SROSS-C, contributing to scientific research and demonstrating the viability of India’s indigenous launch capabilities.

Characteristics of ASLV

The main specifications of the ASLV are listed below.

  • The height of the vehicle is approximately 23.5 meters.
  • The diameter of the vehicle is 1 meter.
  • The lift-off mass is about 40 tonnes.
  • The number of stages is 4, incorporating a mix of solid and liquid propulsion systems.
  • There were no distinct variants like in the case of PSLV; ASLV was developed as a single configuration to meet specific objectives.
  • The vehicle was first launched on 24 March 1987.

ASLV was designed to demonstrate the capability to inject satellites into low Earth orbit, marking an important phase in India’s space development program. It served as a precursor to the more advanced Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) programs, laying the groundwork for future satellite launch capabilities.
