NET full form in Hindi

The full form of NET in Hindi is “नेशनल एलिजिबिलिटी टेस्ट,” which translates to राष्ट्रीय पात्रता परीक्षा.

N – नेशनल (National)

E – एलिजिबिलिटी (Eligibility)

T – टेस्ट (Test)

NET, meaning “National Eligibility Test,” is an important examination conducted in India for determining the eligibility of candidates for college and university level lectureship and for the Junior Research Fellowship. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India is responsible for organizing this test.

The primary objective of the NET exam is to ensure that the standards for the entrants in the fields of teaching and research are maintained at a high level. This exam serves as a benchmark for assessing the competence and dedication of candidates aspiring to be professors or researchers in various subjects. It also promotes excellence in higher education and research in various fields.

What is NET in Education?

The NET, or National Eligibility Test, is a prominent national level exam in India, orchestrated jointly by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It serves as a gateway for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for lectureship roles in colleges and universities and for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). The primary aim of the NET exam is to uphold minimum standards for individuals entering teaching and research professions.

NET Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility Test (NET) typically include the following aspects:

  1. Educational Qualification: Candidates must have a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university recognized by UGC in Humanities (including languages), Social Science, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science, etc. The required percentage of marks varies; generally, it’s 55% for General Category and 50% for OBC/SC/ST/PwD/Transgender candidates.
  2. Age Limit: For the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the upper age limit is usually 30 years as of the first day of the month in which the NET is conducted. There is age relaxation for OBC, SC, ST, PwD, and women candidates. For the Assistant Professorship, there is no upper age limit.
  3. Nationality: Candidate should be an Indian national.
  4. Reservation Policy: Reservation of seats for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), and PwD candidates is as per the Government of India norms.

It’s important to note that these criteria can be subject to change, and candidates are advised to refer to the latest notification from the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NET exam, for the most current information.

Who conducts NET?

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Previously, it was organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) but the responsibility was shifted to NTA. The NTA conducts the UGC NET for subjects that fall under the purview of the University Grants Commission.

Additionally, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the CSIR NET for science subjects. Both exams aim to determine eligibility for college and university-level lectureships and for awarding Junior Research Fellowships in India.
